The Chuncheon 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships will be held from 16 to 20 September at the Air Dome in Chuncheon, Republic of Korea. As the highest-graded poomsae event on the World Taekwondo (WT) calendar this year, it is both the annual final exam for the world's leading poomsae athletes and a window for dojang coaches and equipment buyers to read where poomsae gear is heading. This article covers the event, the key schedule milestones, team preparations, and what it all means for poomsae uniforms and venue equipment.
Event overview: the largest poomsae event on the WT calendar
According to the official WT event platform at worldtkd.simplycompete.com, the championships run from 16 to 20 September 2026 at the Air Dome, Sports town-gil, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon State, Republic of Korea. The event is organised by the Chuncheon Organizing Committee, with the official contact address tkd@clt.or.kr. Within the WT competition system the championships are graded G-8, the highest tier of WT event classification.
In its team announcement, Taekwondo Canada described the event as the largest of its kind in the world and the biggest poomsae event on the World Taekwondo calendar this year. For dojangs that teach poomsae as a core discipline, the division structure and judging emphasis seen in Chuncheon usually set the direction for the next training cycle.

Schedule and entries: the milestones at a glance
Registration for the championships opened in three phases: early registration from 24 June to 8 July, regular registration from 8 July to 19 August, and late registration from 19 August, closing on 31 August 2026. Once entries closed, the registrations figure shown on the official WT event page exceeded 2,500.
On the schedule side, the organisers have published two documents: a daily schedule updated on 1 September, and the official competition schedule released on 9 September. Competition runs across parallel courts, with age groups and disciplines spread across the competition days, so athletes should treat the organising committee's final draw and running order as the definitive reference.
Divisions and categories
Based on the rosters published by national associations, the Chuncheon championships cover individual, pair and team poomsae, alongside freestyle poomsae. Age divisions are broken down further into cadet, junior, under-30, under-40, under-50 and under-60 categories, as well as over-60 and over-65 groups. Because athletes can enter both individual and team events, team composition has become a key part of every delegation's preparation.
Who will be on the floor in Chuncheon
Taekwondo Canada announced its team on 8 September: a delegation of 54, including 46 athletes (22 women and 24 men) plus eight coaching and support staff, spanning divisions from cadet through over-65. In the announcement, Taekwondo Canada High Performance Director Allan Wrigley said: We are proud to name a talented and committed Canadian team for the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships.
In Europe, British Taekwondo had earlier confirmed a squad of 34 athletes. As more national rosters are finalised, this year's field is shaping up to be both deep and competitive. For dojang teams entering a world-level poomsae event for the first time, becoming familiar with how international panels read performance is worth more than simply adding more repetitions of a form.
Technical revision before competition matters just as much. Our Taegeuk 1-8 guide breaks down the key movements and recurring deductions for each of the eight Taegeuk forms, making it a practical checklist for the final two weeks of preparation. More event and rules coverage is collected in the Tournament News category.

Back from the arena to the dojang: choosing poomsae gear
Poomsae and kyorugi place different demands on a uniform. Kyorugi uniforms prioritise light weight and heat dissipation, whereas poomsae scoring rewards the line, amplitude and rhythm of a movement. A poomsae uniform therefore has to hold a crisp shoulder line and hem when the athlete holds a static position, which makes fabric weight and structural support the first considerations. The same movement performed in a uniform that lacks support reads as loose and unstructured to a panel of judges.
MOOTO develops its poomsae line separately from its kyorugi line, and both the Taebek series and the Republic poomsae uniform are pattern-engineered around poomsae form and posture. When building stock, buyers should check graded inventory across men's and women's cuts as well as adult (Dan) and youth (Poom) neck styles. The Chuncheon division structure alone spans cadet through over-65, so a single size band will rarely match real demand.

For dojangs preparing a poomsae programme or hosting a regional poomsae event, mat and venue specifications need to be confirmed early as well. Our Facility Customizer page covers the full path from measuring a hall and designing a layout through to installation guidance, and it can be planned alongside uniform purchasing. That avoids the common rework of ordering mats to a kyorugi court standard that cannot support the zoned requirements of a poomsae competition.
Frequently asked questions
journal.faq
Q1.When do the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships take place?+
The championships run from 16 to 20 September 2026 at the Air Dome in Chuncheon, Republic of Korea, across five competition days.
Q2.What grade is the event?+
It is graded G-8 within the WT competition system, the highest tier of WT event classification, and the largest poomsae event on the 2026 WT calendar.
Q3.Can a kyorugi uniform be used for poomsae?+
It is not recommended. Kyorugi uniforms emphasise light weight and heat dissipation, while poomsae uniforms emphasise structural support and silhouette during static positions. MOOTO's poomsae line, including the Taebek series and the Republic poomsae uniform, is developed separately for this reason.
Q4.What should a dojang consider when buying poomsae uniforms in bulk?+
Plan by division: stock youth (Poom) and adult (Dan) neck styles, and men's and women's cuts, separately, and allow size headroom for promotion cycles. Bulk terms and dealer arrangements are available through an inquiry.
