Para Taekwondo Day 1: Three Nations Share Opening Golds

Para taekwondo opened in Nagoya on 19 October with Mongolia, Chinese Taipei and Iran taking the first three K44 golds, while Uzbekistan led the day with four medals from a field of 83 athletes.

Para taekwondo opened at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Para Games on 19 October at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Gymnasium. Three K44 titles were decided on day one, with Mongolia, Chinese Taipei and Iran sharing the golds, while Uzbekistan finished the day with the largest haul at four medals. For operators, the more telling figure is the size of the field: 83 athletes from 18 countries and regions, 40 of them women.

Three golds on day one: two women's divisions, one men's

Iran's Ailar Jami won the women's K44 -47kg title, with Thailand's Khwansuda Phuangkitcha taking silver. Phuangkitcha is a Paris Paralympic silver medallist and the defending champion from Hangzhou, which says something about the depth of this division in Asia.

Mongolia's Sürenjav Ulambayar took the women's K44 -52kg gold. Her record already included the Paris 2024 Paralympic title, silver at the previous Asian Para Games in Hangzhou and gold at the Muju Taekwondowon 2026 Grand Prix; this win adds the Asian Para Games title to that sequence.

Chinese Taipei's Xiang-wen Xiao won the men's K44 -58kg division. Mongolia's Tyemirbyek Khaulyet took bronze in the same division, while Uzbekistan's Kizlarkhon Isomiddinova claimed bronze in the women's -47kg. Both advanced through repechage.

Medal spread: Uzbekistan leads the day with four

By delegation, Uzbekistan collected four medals across the three divisions, two silver and two bronze, the largest haul of the day. Iran and Mongolia took one gold and one bronze each, and Chinese Taipei closed with a single gold. The pattern matters: in K44 divisions the Central Asian teams now carry real depth, and golds are not concentrating. Three divisions, three different nations.

Why repechage deserves its own paragraph

Under para taekwondo competition rules, semi-final losers still have a route to bronze through the repechage. Both bronze medals on day one came that way: Khaulyet for Mongolia and Isomiddinova for Uzbekistan. For coaching staff the practical consequence is that planning cannot revolve only around reaching a final. An extra repechage bout means another weigh-in, another warm-up and another round of gear checks. Strap retention in protectors and how quickly a dobok recovers from sweat are usually filed under comfort; in a schedule like this they shape how an athlete shows up for the second match.

Field size: 83 athletes, 18 countries and regions, 40 women

We previewed the entry numbers and schedule before the event (Nagoya Para Taekwondo: 83 Athletes Set a Participation Record). The taekwondo competition brings 83 athletes from 18 countries and regions, 40 of them women. For comparison, the women's field at the previous edition in Hangzhou was 32, and that growth is the most striking number in the set.

At the opening ceremony on 18 October, taekwondo athletes carried the flag for Afghanistan, China, Nepal, the Philippines and Uzbekistan. Flagbearer slots normally go to a delegation's figurehead for a sport; five delegations handing that role to taekwondo says something about the sport's weight inside those associations.

The rulebook: kicks only, no head contact

The official sport description for the Games is explicit: para taekwondo differs from standard rules in that attacks to the head are prohibited and only kicks count as valid technique. Scoring follows the same logic, with a simple kick worth 2 points and a kick with a 180-degree turning or 360-degree spinning motion worth 4.

Read together, those two rules decide where training attention goes. First, the trunk is the only scoring surface, so precision inside the chest-guard footprint pays better than chasing height. Second, turning and spinning techniques carry double the base value while also raising the cost of losing balance; under kicks-only rules a missed spin usually hands the distance to the opponent. It also explains why the rhythm here looks like short exchanges: one opening, one displacement.

No head contact does not mean no head protection. Accidental contact still happens in training and sparring, where headgear serves protection rather than scoring (MOOTO EXTERA 2 Pro Face Covered Headgear, official MOOTO Korea product image).

For equipment the implication is just as direct. The chest guard is the surface that absorbs repeated impact, so strap retention and consistent panel rebound decide whether it is still sitting in place after several bouts. Mat choice, in turn, shapes the load on the ankle when a spinning kick lands, which is why WT-recognised mat specifications treat thickness and rebound as hard requirements.

Takeaway: under kicks-only, no-head-contact rules, the fit stability of the chest guard and the controllability of spinning technique are the two lines that decide results.

Day two: four more categories

Tuesday 20 October brings four divisions: men's K44 -63kg and -70kg, and women's K44 -57kg and -65kg. The remaining three titles are decided on 21 October, closing the taekwondo programme one day before the Games themselves end. Three days and ten K44 categories make up the full medal set.

Three notes for dojangs and buyers

First, certification and dimensional consistency come before unit price. A WT-recognised court is 8m x 8m, so tile count follows directly from floor size. Where a dojang runs standard and para sessions in the same hall, joint accuracy and how fast the floor can be taken apart decide whether a conversion fits into half a day.

Second, size protectors by category, not by headcount. Chest-guard sizing varies by weight division inside K44, and a rising share of women athletes means the small-size band needs its own stocking ratio. The 40 women in this field translate, at dojang level, into a separate kit list for women's classes.

Third, put the requirements on the table before discussing price. For bulk enquiries, send floor dimensions, the category mix of your regular athletes and whether the floor must serve both standard and para training; we will come back with tile counts, a protector size split and a phased delivery plan.
