Taekwondo Dobok Fabric & Cut: Kyorugi, Poomsae, Standard

On the same training mat you will usually see three dobok styles at once: the slimmer kyorugi cut, the structured poomsae cut and the standard training cut. All are white with black trim, yet their weave, weight and tailoring differ. This guide sorts dobok into four use-based categories, walks through four fabric checks you can run on the spot, and shows dojangs and dealers how to plan size ratios.

On the same training mat, a coach will often see three kinds of dobok at once: the slimmer cut worn by kyorugi athletes, the structured cut of the poomsae team, and the standard cut used by everyday classes. All of them are white with black trim, yet their weave, weight and tailoring are not the same. This guide first sorts dobok into four categories by use, then breaks the fabric down into four checks you can run on the spot, and closes with a sizing-ratio approach for dojangs and dealers.

1. Start with use: the four dobok categories

The first decision is not fabric, it is purpose. Today's MOOTO range falls into four groups. The first is the kyorugi line, built for World Taekwondo (WT) sparring: the EXTERA 6 (black-neck EX6 and poom-neck version) plus the stretch-woven EXTERA Pro 2 and Pro 3. The second is the poomsae line, led by the Taebek series, which is split by rank into Dan and Poom (junior) versions with separate men's and women's fits; the Republic poomsae uniforms belong to this group as well.

The third group covers standard and daily training wear: MTX 2 Standard Uniform (with black-neck and poom-neck options), the lighter MTX version, the MTX Color Uniform in midnight blue, scarlett red and slate grey, plus BASIC 5 KUKKIWON and BC6 BASIC 6. The fourth is the grand master line, represented by the GEUM GANG Grand Master Uniform in white and navy with black neck, aimed at coaches and senior practitioners.

Only once a model sits in the right category does talking about fabric make sense. The same fabric standard applied to a kyorugi uniform and a standard uniform leads to completely different conclusions.

EXTERA 6 kyorugi uniform (black neck): the core of the MOOTO competition line, with collar and cut designed around WT sparring.

2. Reading the fabric: weave, weight, blend, stretch

Weave sets hand feel and durability. Most dobok fabric uses plain or grain (pearl-like) weaves: the tighter the yarns interlace, the stiffer and more tear-resistant the cloth is, at the cost of a harder initial feel. Ripstop-style grid structures add reinforcing yarns to raise tear resistance and are common in heavier-use training models. Checking on the spot is simple: hold the cloth against the light to see whether the grain is even, then pull it in both directions to see whether it goes noticeably translucent.

Weight drives drape and body feel, and is easiest to read in three bands. Light fabric breathes and dries quickly, which suits summer and high-intensity classes; medium is where most standard uniforms sit; heavy fabric drapes better and gives a crisper sound on movement, but it runs hotter and dries more slowly. There is no need to chase the heaviest cloth: for students training two hours or more a day, breathability usually matters more than stiffness.

Blend determines care. 100% cotton is skin-friendly and traditional in feel but shrinks more noticeably; cotton-polyester blends hold their dimensions better and survive more wash cycles. Either way, a cold first wash on its own, with no high-heat drying, clearly reduces the risk of distortion.

Stretch determines range of motion. Kyorugi involves wide leg movement, which is why stretch-woven versions such as EXTERA Pro 2 and Pro 3 exist. Standard and poomsae uniforms instead solve range of motion through a roomier cut rather than fabric elasticity. That is exactly why buying one size up is not a substitute for choosing the right series.

Order of decisions: use first (kyorugi / poomsae / standard / master), then fabric grade (weave + weight), and only then size for fit. Reverse the order and you are most likely to end up with an expensive uniform that simply does not work.

MTX 2 Standard Uniform: the everyday workhorse for training and class wear, offered with black neck or poom neck.

3. Reading the cut: kyorugi and poomsae are tailored differently

The kyorugi cut serves scoring and range of motion: sleeve and body lengths are usually more restrained so fabric does not blur the line of a technique during fast turns, and the collar type (black neck or poom neck) relates to how a competitor is identified under event rules. The poomsae cut instead emphasises the cleanness of a technique's line once extended, which places higher demands on fabric structure and garment finishing; Dan and Poom versions also differ in proportion.

The point most often missed in practice is that one size does not fit the same across lines. Kyorugi cuts run slimmer and standard cuts looser, so carrying the same size across series tends to produce a wrong sleeve or body length. Use two movement tests on the spot instead of a height-and-weight chart alone: check where the cuff sits with arms hanging naturally, and feel whether the shoulders pull in a squat.

Taebek 3 poomsae uniform (Dan version): the poomsae line varies its cut by rank and gender and stresses clean lines on extension.

4. Certification and event fit: rules first, model second

For uniforms used in WT-sanctioned events or rank examinations, colour, collar type and markings must match the event handbook and the current WT equipment requirements. Details can change between event levels and seasons, so confirm against the organiser's rules for that specific event before purchasing. MOOTO has been an official WT partner since 1984, and its range separates KUKKIWON-marked models (BASIC 5 KUKKIWON) from dedicated kyorugi and poomsae lines. The order of judgement is: lock the rule requirement first, then pick the model — read our WT-approved dobok guide for the certification logic.

5. Dojangs and dealers: plan by student mix, not by one bestseller

For a dojang buyer, a healthy stock structure mirrors the student structure: the junior programme runs mainly on Poom and standard uniforms, the competition squad takes kyorugi uniforms by headcount with a small number of stretch versions, and the coaching staff wears the grand master line. Standard uniforms, being the most widely usable, are usually the single largest share of any order. Counting students by class and rank before ordering beats replenishing by habit, and it reduces both dead stock and missing sizes.

For bulk orders, confirm specifications, collar-to-rank matching, lead time and packing method in one inquiry rather than across several top-ups, which is how colour and collar mismatches appear — our dojo bulk purchasing guide covers the workflow. Dojangs and dealers can submit a bulk inquiry through official MOOTO channels, and the sales team will confirm specifications, quantities and lead time.

"A dobok is not a consumable; it is the tool a student wears every day. Separate use, fabric and cut, and the same budget will equip more students."

FAQ

Q1.Can a kyorugi uniform be used for daily training?+

Yes, but kyorugi cuts are slimmer with shorter body length, so repeated daily drilling concentrates wear. Standard uniforms last longer for class use; keep the kyorugi uniform for sparring and pre-competition work.

Q2.100% cotton or a cotton-polyester blend?+

Choose cotton for a traditional, skin-friendly feel and accept a higher shrink rate; choose a cotton-polyester blend for dimensional stability and wash durability. Both benefit from a cold first wash on their own.

Q3.How does a dojang avoid missing sizes?+

Build a ratio table from class headcount and rank structure, state quantities per size and collar type in the inquiry, and where useful stage deliveries across the term rather than filling every size at once.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • →Sort dobok by use into four groups: kyorugi (EXTERA, EXTERA Pro), poomsae (Taebek, Republic), standard/daily (MTX, BASIC/BC) and grand master (GEUM GANG). Fabric standards do not transfer between them.
  • →Read fabric on four points: weave (plain/grain/ripstop grid), weight (light/medium/heavy), blend (cotton vs cotton-polyester) and stretch.
  • →Kyorugi cuts run slimmer, poomsae cuts prioritise structure and standard cuts run looser; the same size fits differently across lines, so verify with cuff position and squat tension.
  • →Dojangs and dealers should plan by student age and rank structure and confirm specs, collar type, size split and lead time in a single inquiry.
