Electronic Protector Gear Setup: Pre-Match Checklist

Electronic protectors turned taekwondo gear from safety equipment into competition equipment. Which items the organiser provides, which the athlete must bring, and which must pass a WT-recognition check at inspection all decide whether a competitor makes it onto the mat. Four steps, plus a checklist for dojangs and athletes.

Electronic protectors and scoring systems (PSS) changed how taekwondo matches are judged, and they changed the gear list too. Which items the organiser provides, which the athlete must bring, and which have to pass a WT-recognition check before the first bout all decide whether a competitor actually steps onto the mat. This guide splits the process into four steps and finishes with a pre-match checklist dojangs and athletes can use directly.

What electronic protectors changed

Under a protector and scoring system, scoring works differently from the era of purely human judging. Understanding WT competition rules on scoring, penalties and equipment is the starting point. For spectators the change is quieter decision-making; for buyers and coaches the change is that protectors stopped being purely safety equipment and became competition equipment - they have to work with the system used at the event and pass inspection on the day.

Step 1: Confirm the system - and who supplies what

Preparation starts with the event outline. Outlines for international competitions name the protector and scoring system used at that event and state which equipment the organising committee provides and which items competitors must bring themselves. A common split: the organiser supplies electronic chest and head protectors, while insoles or electronic socks for the scoring system, plus hand, foot and groin protectors, remain the athlete's responsibility. Once entries are confirmed, read that section line by line.

Face-covered headgear: head protection that is also part of the electronic scoring system.

If the scoring logic itself is still unfamiliar, start with our breakdown of electronic protector scoring zones, then come back to the equipment list. Scoring logic decides what you train; the equipment list decides whether you compete. The two are not interchangeable.

Provided by the organiser does not mean an empty kit bag

An organiser-supplied chest protector and headgear does not mean an athlete can arrive at inspection with nothing. Most events still require competitors to bring hand and shin protectors, foot protection and a groin guard, along with regulation dobok and belt; some events also require athletes to bring the insoles that work with the electronic system. Writing the organiser-supplied list and the athlete-supplied list as two columns is the single most effective way to avoid borrowing gear on site.

Bottom line: split the list by who supplies it, verify each item against WT recognition, and only then talk about brands and budget.

Step 2: WT recognition and equipment checks

WT-sanctioned events require WT-recognised protectors, and inspection checks both model and condition. Torn stitching, collapsed padding or failed straps can fail inspection even when the model is correct. The most common mistake for dojangs travelling with a squad is packing training gear and competition gear in the same bag: training-level protectors wear far faster, and problems are usually discovered too late to replace anything.

The three items that fail most often

First, headgear: face-covered and open models are not interchangeable at every event, so confirm against the outline. Second, foot and shin protectors: oversize pairs slip, which affects landing and scoring. Third, hand protectors: once the inner lining thins the feel changes, athletes adjust their fist without noticing and lost speed follows. Replace or reinforce these three about a week before departure rather than at the venue.

Step 3: Build the set by body zone

A complete competition set usually covers headgear, chest guard, hand protectors, foot or shin-and-instep protectors, a groin guard and a mouth guard. MOOTO's current protector line covers every one of those positions: the chest guard comes in a red-and-blue reversible version and an MTX version, headgear is available with or without a face cover, and hand, foot, shin, groin and mouth protection are all separate items. Buying by position means a single worn item can be replaced without re-buying the set.

Reversible chest guard: red on one side, blue on the other, so one piece serves training and competition.

Work in three steps: position, size, then use case. Confirm the positions the event requires, pick sizes from body weight and height, and separate competition gear from training gear. Sizing is not only a comfort issue - an oversize foot protector slips during turning kicks and loose headgear shifts when the head snaps back, both of which cost technique quality. For the broader buying framework, see our full protector buying guide.

Hand protectors: lining and palm coverage decide how the fist feels, and they wear out first.

Step 4: Buying and spare strategy for dojangs and athletes

For a dojang the hard question is not what to buy but how much to hold. For a competition squad, stock three layers: personal items that never get shared (hand, foot, groin and mouth guards), shared team spares (one or two common sizes of headgear and chest guard), and fast-wearing parts (hand protector linings, straps). Keeping personal items personal is both a hygiene measure and a way to stop athletes compromising on size. When ordering in bulk, put the position list, quantities, size distribution and target market in one message so quotes can actually be compared.

"Protectors are not consumables, but they should be managed like consumables: track wear on the high-frequency items and condition on the rest."

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • →Start with the outline: write the organiser-supplied and athlete-supplied lists as two columns.
  • →Protectors must be WT-recognised, and condition counts as much as model (tears, collapsed padding and failed straps can all fail inspection).
  • →Build by position: headgear, chest guard, hands, feet or shin, groin and mouth guard.
  • →Stock three layers - personal, team spare, wear parts - to cut last-minute borrowing.

FAQ

Q1.Do I need to buy an electronic chest protector myself?+

At most international events the organiser provides the electronic chest and head protectors, but always check that event's outline; athletes normally still bring hand, foot and groin protectors.

Q2.Can training protectors be used in competition?+

We do not recommend it. Training gear wears faster and some models differ from competition requirements, which risks failing inspection.

Q3.How should protector sizes be chosen?+

By body weight and height, with attention to fit on feet and head: loose foot protectors slip on turning kicks and loose headgear shifts when the head snaps back.
