Taekwondo Mouthguard Guide: Size, Fitting and Replacement

The most underrated piece of taekwondo gear. Single-layer, double-layer and custom guards compared, plus sizing for adults and children, boil-and-bite versus self-adapting, storage rules, five replacement signals and a class-based stocking plan for dojos.

A mouthguard is the most underrated piece of taekwondo protective gear: inexpensive, small, and directly tied to the safety of teeth, jaw and soft tissue in sparring. This guide breaks the buying decision into four parts — construction, sizing, fitting method and replacement cycle — and adds a practical framework for dojo bulk purchasing.

Why the mouthguard matters more than it looks

The face is a scoring area in sparring, and spinning back kicks, close-range pressure and knee contact can all snap the jaw shut without warning. The job of a mouthguard is not to clamp the teeth together; it separates the upper and lower dental arches, cushions impact travelling into the jaw, and reduces the chance of lips, cheeks and tongue being cut by your own teeth. The damage that accumulates over years usually comes from repeated small impacts in training, not from a single obvious blow.

Many dojangs treat mouthguards as a last-minute purchase before a registration deadline, which produces a mix of poor-fitting self-bought models that students keep pushing back with their tongue, disturbing breathing and speech. Putting the mouthguard on the regular equipment list costs less than fixing the problem later. It is also why most WT-system events include a mouthguard in the protective equipment requirements — check the latest official rules and event notices for the exact requirement by category and age group.

In short: competition sparring calls for a double-layer or custom-fit guard; children need a dedicated small size matched to dental development; a mouthguard is a consumable and should be replaced once it deforms, thins or shows clear bite marks.

Single layer, double layer or custom: choosing a route

Taekwondo mouthguards fall into three groups. Single-layer pre-formed guards are one-piece, ready to wear, and cheap to buy and restock — ideal for beginners and kids' classes. Double-layer mouthguards (heat-pressed) bond two layers together, with the outer layer absorbing impact and the inner layer conforming to the arch; they hold position better and are the mainstream choice for competition training and events. Custom-fit guards are moulded from a dentist's impression, offer the best fit, and suit advanced athletes or anyone with orthodontic work.

Boil-and-bite versus self-adapting

Boil-and-bite guards must be softened in hot water and formed by biting down, and they can only be re-formed a limited number of times — overheating shortens their life noticeably. Self-adapting guards rely on the material's memory and bite pressure, are simpler to fit, and give slightly less precision but are perfectly adequate for daily training. For bulk dojo distribution, self-adapting models sharply reduce the loss rate from students ruining a guard while forming it.

Sizing: adults, children and the in-between years

Mouthguard sizing does not follow height or weight like a dobok; it follows arch width and the stage of jaw development. Children in the mixed-dentition stage are usually over-extended by an adult size, which presses on the rear teeth, interferes with the bite and is far more likely to be knocked loose during a kick. The check is simple: no gap at the front teeth, contact at the rear, easy speech, and the guard stays in place through a few shadow kicks.

When a student sits in the awkward in-between years, step down one size and fit it properly rather than jumping straight to an adult guard. For a dojo, the sensible practice is to stock children's and adults' sizes separately and record the size by class at registration, so shortfalls do not surface on the first day of a term.

Daily care: storage, cleaning and four rules

What really shortens a mouthguard's life is not use but careless storage. Saliva and sweat left after training accelerate material ageing, and a guard stuffed into a dobok pocket gets crushed out of shape. Rinse it in clean water, air-dry it naturally, and keep it in a vented case. Write these four rules into your dojo equipment notice: no hot-water soaking, no alcohol or strong alkaline cleaners, no prolonged sun exposure, and never store it pressed against hard protectors.

Mouthguard replacement cycle: five signals that mean it is time

A mouthguard is a consumable: the material fatigues and the fit loosens. Replace it when any of the following appears — visible bite marks or cracks, thinning or softening edges, yellowing that cleaning will not remove, a loose fit that needs constant repositioning with the tongue, or a single heavy frontal impact. Clubs training on a season system are safer budgeting one guard per season, while competition athletes in a dense season may need replacement every few months. Materials differ in durability, so let the product instructions and the actual fit decide.

"A mouthguard's value is not how hard it is, but whether it still fits. A loose guard offers almost no protection at the moment of impact."

Dojos and dealers: putting the mouthguard on the list

mouthguard line (adult single, kids single, double-layer) covers three specifications so one list can be completed in a single order instead of repeated small restocks.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • →Competition sparring: double-layer or custom-fit; daily training: single-layer pre-formed is enough
  • →Size by arch width and jaw development, and stock children's and adult sizes separately
  • →Boil-and-bite guards can only be re-formed a few times — issue self-adapting models for bulk
  • →Rinse and air-dry after every session, store in a case, avoid heat, alcohol and sunlight
  • →Replace on bite marks, thinning, yellowing or looseness; budget one per season

FAQ

Q1.Does it have to be a taekwondo-specific mouthguard?+

Use one designed for contact sports. Taekwondo guards are usually graded for children and adults, which makes them easier for a dojo to distribute and restock by class.

Q2.Can a child use a trimmed adult mouthguard?+

We do not recommend it. Trimming the edge breaks the sealed structure, reduces cushioning, and the over-extension against the rear teeth remains. Choose a dedicated smaller size.

Q3.How long does one mouthguard last?+

It depends on the material and frequency of use. Season-based training usually budgets one per season; competition athletes in a dense season may replace more often. Replace immediately on bite marks, softening, yellowing or looseness.
