WT Taekwondo Competition Rules Explained: Scoring, Penalties & Gear

From electronic scoring to penalty calls, weight divisions to equipment inspection - one article covering the core of World Taekwondo (WT) competition rules for athletes, coaches and referees.

Rules Are the Baseline of Fair Play - and the Starting Point of Tactics

Since 1973, the World Taekwondo (WT) federation has kept refining its rules to make the sport fairer and more exciting. Understanding rules is not just for referees - athletes learn how to score, coaches learn how to plan. This article maps the core of WT competition rules.

Matches take place on an 8m x 8m WT standard competition mat - three rounds of two minutes with a one-minute break. Olympic weight classes: men -58/-68/-80/+80kg, women -49/-57/-67/+67kg.

Scoring core: punch to trunk 1pt, regular kick to trunk 2pts, turning kick to trunk 3pts, kick to head 3pts, turning kick to head 4pts. Electronic protectors auto-validate impact.

How Electronic Scoring (PSS) Works

Since London 2012, WT has fully adopted the Protector and Scoring Systems (PSS). Sensors in the trunk and head protectors judge scoring by impact force. The reform cut human error dramatically and made impact standards objective.

Warnings & Deductions: Kyongo and Gamjeom

Fouls fall into two categories: Kyongo (warning) - grabbing, pushing, stepping out, falling; two warnings auto-convert into one deduction. Gamjeom (deduction) - attacking a fallen opponent or below the belt - costs 1 point directly. Ten deductions in one match means disqualification.

"Clearer rules make better matches. Reading the referee's scale is a must-have skill for elite athletes."

Equipment Inspection: The Hard Gate Every Athlete Faces

WT-certified trunk guard, headgear, shin, forearm, groin protectors and mouthpiece are mandatory. Inspection happens after weigh-in; athletes without WT-certified gear are disqualified. For competitors, certification comes first - always.

MOOTO's EXTERA line is the WT-certified competition protection family, covering head, trunk, forearm, shin, instep and groin. From national events to World Championships, elite athletes worldwide compete in EXTERA.

Practical Advice for Athletes & Coaches

Three things to finish a month before competition: first, confirm all protectors are WT-certified and in date; second, run targeted scoring drills on electronic mats to feel the PSS threshold; third, drill boundary and falling scenarios with a partner to avoid careless deductions.

journal.faq

Q1.How does the electronic protector judge force?+

PSS sensors read impact acceleration against the event's published threshold. Athletes should adapt on the same mat type before competing.

Q2.What's the difference between Kyongo and Gamjeom?+

Kyongo is a warning (grabbing, stepping out); two warnings convert to one deduction. Gamjeom deducts 1 point directly for serious fouls like attacking below the belt.

Q3.Can I compete without WT-certified gear?+

No. WT certification is a hard entry requirement - failing inspection means disqualification.

Q4.Do competition mats differ from training mats?+

WT standard competition mats (8x8m plus 1m safety zone) must meet WT specs. Training mats are more flexible but should still be high-density and non-slip.

journal.takeaways

  • Three rounds of 2 minutes; turning kick to head (4pts) is the highest scorer
  • Two Kyongo warnings auto-convert to one Gamjeom deduction
  • WT-certified protectors are a hard gate - self-check before every event
  • Know the PSS threshold; train on electronic scoring mats

Rules evolve, the arena advances. MOOTO will keep tracking WT rule updates and major event coverage - follow the journal to read the competitive trends behind the rules.
